The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is the base for more than 1,600 clinical, biomedical and public health researchers, students and support staff working on critical health priorities including asthma, cancer, diabetes and stroke.
HMRI is a collaboration between the University of Newcastle and the Hunter New England Local Health District. It is the second largest medical research institute in NSW and works across multiple campuses including state-of-the-art research facilities at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
The John Hunter Hospital is the principal referral centre and tertiary hospital for the Hunter region and surrounds. Providing care to communities up to the Queensland border, ‘the John’ hosts one of the busiest emergency departments and trauma centres in the state and is consistently rated among the highest performing facilities.
The NSW Government is investing $835 million in the John Hunter Hospital’s redevelopment, which includes delivery of the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct and a Health Innovation Living Lab in partnership with the University of Newcastle.
Unique health opportunities
John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct
The NSW Government has committed $835 million to upgrade the John Hunter Hospital campus, and deliver the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct – an innovative and integrated precinct with industry-leading facilities.
Forming part of the precinct is the $2.3 million Hunter Health Innovation Lab – a partnership between Hunter New England Local Health District and the University of Newcastle. The Lab is a purpose-built facility that will provide a dedicated space for clinicians, researchers, students and industry partners to collaborate and drive healthcare innovations.
The innovation activities of the innovation lab will reflect the research and clinical strengths of the Hunter New England Local Health District, and the distinctive rural and regional operating environment. Initial areas of focus for the lab include digital health, sustainability in healthcare, medical technology, and operations and logistics.
The upgrade to the John Hunter Hospital campus is scheduled for completion in 2026.
